Israeli Students Develop AI That Detects Pain in Cows Better Than Vets

Jerusalem, 7 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Two Israeli students at the Shenkar College of Engineering in Ramat Gan have developed an AI model that detects pain in cows with greater accuracy than expert veterinarians. Using computer vision and machine learning, Gil Elias and Nevo Shashua trained their system on videos of cows before and after surgery, analyzing facial expressions and body language. The model consistently outperformed veterinary professionals in identifying pain, offering a new standard for animal welfare monitoring.

The study was Conducted under Dr. Marcelo Feiglstein and in collaboration with researchers in veterinary artificial intelligence from the Tech4Animals laboratory, the University of Haifa, the University of São Paulo, Washington State University, and Northumbria University.

The research has been submitted to Scientific Reports, a Nature journal, and marks a significant advance in applying AI to Agriculture.
