Jerusalem, 3 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) — An IDF (Israel Defense Forces) infantry brigade comprised of Haredi (ultra-orthodox) soldiers has a new commander. Col. S. assumed the position of commander of the Hasmonean Brigade, replacing Col. A., who served in the position for the past two years and will soon begin serving as advisor to the Chief of Staff for Haredi affairs. (Identities of some senior IDF officers are kept secret for security reasons.)

The Hasmoneans, also known as the Maccabees, defeated the Greeks in the Hannukah rebellion in the second century BC and then established a new Jewish monarchy in Israel until the Roman Empire conquered the country.

The exchange ceremony was held today (Tuesday) at the Beit Shean National Park, led by the Commander of the Land Force, Major General Nadav Lotan, the Chief Infantry Officer, Brigadier General Omer Cohen, the Head of the Planning Division and Director of Personnel, Brigadier General Shai Taib, and with the participation of commanders, soldiers, families and other invitees.

“The Hasmonean’s mission is to form a wall in the face of an explosive event,” said the outgoing commander of the Hasmonean Brigade, Col. A., “The Hasmonean’s mission to save Israel immediately is narrow. The source of the Hasmonean’s strength is in being a general person connected to all of Israel and going forth on behalf of the whole. You are not a new Haredi, God forbid, you are simply restoring a crown to the old. Q. My dear brother, a great privilege has fallen to your lot, I am sure that you will conquer additional peaks. There is still much work ahead of you, this is only the beginning of the road, with great success, with the help of God.”
