Uncovering the Secrets Beneath Our Feet

The day featured three thematic sessions:
The first session focused on the history of subsurface research — from the early establishment of Israel’s stratigraphic knowledge, through the activities of the Oil Department in the 1960s–70s, to the evolving research and capabilities of the Subsurface Laboratory in recent decades.
The second session delved into the Levant Basin, with talks on syn-rift evolution, continental slope migration, erosion and sedimentation processes, and the formation of salt-related structures during the Quaternary.
The third session addressed the onshore domain, presenting recent studies on tectonic processes recorded in the lower basalt of northern Israel, and applied aspects of subsurface use for CO₂ storage, including numerical modeling.
The seminar concluded with a guided tour to the Geological Survey’s core repository, led by Dr. Rani Calvo, Robert Knafo, and David Ballas, offering participants a firsthand look at unique geological samples and their critical role in advancing our understanding of Israel’s subsurface.
A heartfelt thank-you to all the speakers, participants, and organizers who contributed to the success of this truly deep experience.
