Israel marks Memorial Day 2025 for the fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism

Remembrance Day, Yom HaZikaron, is a day of collective and personal anguish mingled with honor for the fallen.

Memorial Day, which begins this year on Tuesday evening, 29 April 2025, is a day of collective and personal anguish mingled with honor for the fallen. The official events begin at 8:00 PM with a moment of national silence heralded by a one-minute siren.

According to data published by the Ministry of Defense:

  • Snce 1860, the year that the first Jewish settlers left the secure walls of Jerusalem to build new Jewish neighborhoods, a total of 25,417 people died in defense of the Land of Israel .
  • 5,229 men, women and children were killed in terrorist attacks.
  • 4,503 civilians were killed since the establishment of the State of Israel. Of these, 79 were killed in the past year (since Memorial Day 2024).
  • 934 civilians were killed in the Swords of Iron War. Of these, 778 were killed in the October 7 massacre.

As happens every year, a siren will go off on the eve of Memorial Day at 8 p.m., and another one on Memorial Day itself at 11 a.m., during which the country will stand still for a moment of silence and remembrance for the fallen soldiers of the IDF.

Memorial Day will end on Wednesday evening (30 April 2025), ushering in Israel’s 77th Independence Day.
