The attack was carried out on 20.7.2023. The three defendants stabbed the complainant, who was seriously injured and required life-saving medical treatment.
According to the verdict, the three defendants conspired to carry out a terrorist attack against Jews.
For this purpose, they armed themselves with knives, entered Israel illegally, and arrived at the Gilo neighborhood in Jerusalem. Upon noticing the complainant, they jointly attacked him with knives, causing him severe physical and psychological injuries.
The defendants were convicted of terrorist acts of attempted murder, illegal possession of a knife, and illegal presence in Israel. One of the defendants was a minor at the time of the offenses.
In its sentencing arguments, the Jerusalem District Prosecutor’s Office, through Adv. Einat Baruchi Yariv, requested that the defendants be sentenced to 25 years in prison, along with a significant suspended sentence and financial compensation to the complainant.
The prosecution argued that this was one of the most severe terrorist offenses in the law books, carried out on an ideological basis and with prior planning, arming themselves with knives, and a combined attack on a random victim in public space. The severe harm to the complainant and the need to protect public safety through deterrent and clear punishment were also emphasized.
The court noted in its ruling that “in the case of the defendants, the prior planning that preceded the act, their joint ambush of a single victim while in a group of three, the great determination and cruelty characterizing the horrific act they committed, and its severe outcome, should be noted with severity.”
