Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar to President Sandu: “It is important to keep an eye on Turkey’s actions in the region. Turkey is currently the most dominant country in Syria, and it aspires to lead Sunni Islam in the region.”
The meeting dealt with the opening of the new embassy in the country, bilateral relations between the countries, the struggle against the Iranian axis and the war in Ukraine. FM Sa’ar expressed appreciation for President Sandu’s statements against antisemitism. The Foreign Minister invited President Sandu to visit Israel.
FM Sa’ar updated the President on the security situation in the various sectors. Referring to the situation in Syria, FM Sa’ar stated:
“The new government in Damascus is comprised of jihadists and Islamists. It is now focusing on the economy, governance, and obtaining international legitimacy, and is therefore adopting a more reserved approach. This has been the case with many Islamist movements that have come to power, including Khomeini’s revolution in Iran in 1979. But it would be advisable to closely monitor their activities. What is clear is that Turkey has the greatest influence over the new regime. The most important thing for us is maintaining our security. The Iranian threat is the most urgent. It is important to pay attention to Turkey’s actions in the region. Turkey is currently the most dominant country in Syria, it aspires to be the leader of Sunni Islam in the region.”
