9 Years for Man Who Shot Boss After Firing

Israeli man receives 9-year sentence for shooting his manager multiple times after being fired, an act deemed audacious and cruel by the court.

The amended indictment, filed as part of a plea deal by Adv. Hofit Kantrovitz from the Southern District Attorney’s Office, and in which Abu Made’am confessed, states that about four years ago, Abu Made’am’s manager at the factory where he worked decided to fire him. Following this, and shortly after the incident, Abu Made’am returned to the factory and shot his manager multiple times. As a result of the shooting, the manager was injured and hospitalized for two months, during which time he was sedated and ventilated for part of the period.

In light of the above and in accordance with his confession, District Court Judge Rachel Toran convicted Abu Made’am of aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

During the sentencing arguments, Adv. Kantrovitz emphasized the severity of the acts, noting that the circumstances of the incident were characterized by audacity, cruelty, lack of mercy, and disregard for the law, especially since the defendant shot the complainant repeatedly, even when he was lying on the ground as a result of the defendant’s shooting. She also noted that while the defendant’s case constitutes an individual harm to the victim, it represents a broader picture of harm to public safety, as the attack occurred in front of others, and in an instant turned a workplace in Israel into a bloody and frightening scene.

In her sentencing ruling, Judge Toran stated that “a review of the indictment reveals a grim picture of an extremely violent incident, and of a defendant who acted without any restraint, and who, by sheer luck, did not cause the victim’s death. We cannot overlook this when violence in the streets, and particularly in the Arab sector, is escalating and the use of firearms is becoming a basic and routine action.”

At the end of her sentencing, Judge Toran emphasized: “The courts must join the general effort to deter individuals and the public from violence involving the use of firearms, especially in the Arab sector, which has become a true plague on the nation, an unrestrained public harm, beyond the individual case of the defendant here, and this must be met with significant and appropriate punishment.”

In light of the above, the judge sentenced Abu Made’am to nine years of actual imprisonment and ordered him to pay 40,000 NIS in compensation to the complainant.
