Approved in preliminary reading: Bill for commemoration of Golda Meir

In its sitting on Wednesday, the Knesset Plenum voted to approve in preliminary reading the Commemoration of Golda Meir Bill, 2024, sponsored by MK Pnina Tameno Shete (Blue and White—National Unity Party), to which a bill sponsored by MK Merav Michaeli (Labor) and a group of MKs was attached. In the vote, 20 Members of Knesset supported the bill, without opposing votes, and it will be turned over to the Education, Culture and Sports Committee for deliberation.

It is proposed to establish a center for commemorating the life and achievements of Golda Meir, who served as a minister and Prime Minister in Israel during the years 1969–1974. The center will also include an institute for expanding the knowledge about her achievements and legacy, an archive and a museum. In addition, once a year on the anniversary of her death, Golda Meir Day will be marked in a state memorial ceremony in IDF camps and in schools.

The explanatory notes to the bill state: “The legislator has already acknowledged in several laws the need to commemorate the life, achievements and legacy of historical figures who shaped the history of the Jewish Yishuv in Eretz Israel and the State of Israel, as an educational and national need. One of these figures was undoubtedly Golda Meir (Myerson), whose life and achievements are an integral part of the national revival of the Jewish Yishuv in Eretz Israel and the State of Israel.”
