State Control Committee votes down proposal to form state commission of inquiry on governmental management of civilian affairs in the war; mother of Nova victim: If state commission of inquiry isn’t formed—we’ll lead the people into the streets

State Control Committee votes down proposal for state commission of inquiry on governmental management of civilian affairs in war; mother of Nova victim.

The State Control Committee, chaired by MK Mickey Levy (Yesh Atid), held a debate on Wednesday on the topic of forming a state commission of inquiry to examine the governmental management of civilian affairs during the Swords of Iron war, in accordance with section 14(b) of the State Comptroller Law.

In the vote, the proposal to exercise the committee’s power to form a state commission of inquiry did not pass; the committee members voted down the proposal by a majority vote. Committee Chair MK Levy voted in favor, as did MKs Merav Ben Ari (Yesh Atid), Yael Ron Ben-Moshe (Blue and White—National Unity Party) and Waleed Alhwashla (Ra’am—United Arab List). The following committee members voted against: MKs Moshe Saada, Osher Shkalim, Tsega Melaku and Tally Gotliv (Likud), Yaakov Tesler (United Torah Judaism) and Moshe Abutbul (Shas).

Reut Edri, mother of Lt. (res.) Ido Edri, who was murdered at the Nova music festival, commented during the committee debate on the promises given to the families of those who were murdered and kidnapped to form a state commission of inquiry after the war. Edri said, “About a month after the disaster, we began to come regularly to the Knesset to many offices, including the offices of the Shas ministers. We were promised explicitly that a state commission of inquiry would be formed immediately after the war. And now, over and over, we are witnessing attempts to form commissions that are not commissions of inquiry under the law. We are the October Council, which represents over 200 families, and recently we have received more and more requests from additional families that seek justice.”

Edri said further, “What kind of [national] revival are we talking about? No revival will be possible without genuine accountability and investigation. Revival will come only after a real commission of inquiry is formed. I have no other revival. We will not accept any other alternative that is not a state commission of inquiry. We will lead the people into the streets, and we won’t back down.”
