Today (03/02), the Bazan Group informed the Ministry of an electricity outage in the factory yards, which led to the shutdown of all facilities in the complex. The malfunction caused gas to be channeled to the flare and an increase in pollutant concentrations in several chimneys, including short periods of black smoke events.
It should be emphasized that the flare is a treatment measure – during the shutdown and startup of production facilities or in case of malfunction – which allows for efficient gas decomposition and prevents their release into the environment.
We remind you that the Ministry continues to advance, with its government partners, plans and mechanisms to cease petrochemical industry activity and promote sustainable development in the Haifa Bay area (TAMA 75) to improve the quality of life and health of residents and for the sake of the environment.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection is monitoring the handling of the malfunction and the air quality data in the area and will update the public as needed.
