Israel’s Educational System Sees 4.9% Increase in Staff

Israel's educational system saw a 4.9% rise in teaching staff for the 2025/26 school year, with new teachers increasing by 19.1%.

Jerusalem, 29 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — In the 2025/2026 school year, the number of teaching staff in Israel’s entire educational system was approximately 228,000, compared to approximately 218,000 in the previous school year (an increase of 4.9%). This is according to the data on the scope of teaching for the 2025/26 school year released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

During the school years 2020/22 -2025/26, the annual rate of change in the number of teaching staff, was 3.4% per year – 3.8% in Hebrew education and 2.0% in Arabic education.

In the current school year, the number of weekly hours worked was approximately 6.557 million, compared to approximately 6.564 million hours in the previous year (a decrease of 0.1%).

Also, the annual rate of change in weekly working hours was 2.9% per year – 3.3% in Hebrew education –and 1.6%.in Arab education.

21,526 teaching staff were added, of whom:

18,741 were new teaching staff (compared to 15,737 last year, an increase of 19.1%) and 2,785 were returning teaching staff (after a break of 3 years or more).
