No Food Shortages for Passover Despite War, Plenty of Fish as Usual for the Holiday

Despite wartime, Israel's Ministry of Agriculture confirms ample produce, imported horseradish from Hungary, and robust fish supplies for Passover celebrations.

Jerusalem, 30 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — In preparation for Passover, Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security reported that all fresh agricultural produce in Israel is being produced as usual, even in the current wartime, and meets local demand (combined with import supplementation in some industries).

Also, in preparation for the Seder, there is an increase in imports of one of the most popular foods during the holiday – horseradish! So far, about 41 tons of horseradish root, which is used to prepare the traditional dish, have been imported from Hungary.

In the fish industry, according to data from The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the average Israeli prefers tilapia and salmon, and in third place is bream. In an average month, Israelis consume about 1.96 kg of fish in terms of whole fish, about 30% of which is fresh fish. Last Passover, fish consumption in retail chains increased by about 18% compared to the rest of the year. Frozen fish consumption increased by 15% During Passover compared to the rest of the year, and fresh fish consumption increased by about 26% during the holiday. During preparations for the holiday, per capita consumption of fresh carp increases and reaches almost twice the amount compared to the rest of the year.

As part of preparations for the holiday, fish farms and fish farmers are preparing to feed fish kosher food for Passover. Data from the Fish Farmers’ Organization indicates that the expected consumption during the upcoming Passover of fresh Israeli fish raised in fish ponds in the country is approximately 1,500 tons, of which 550 tons are carp, 450 tons are tilapia, 180 tons are mullet, 100 tons are bass, 100 tons are barramundi, and approximately 120 tons are fresh pond fish of other varieties, including sea bass, trout, bream, pond bream, peony, and more.
