The Ministry of Environmental Protection Launches Public Awareness Campaign to Dry Out Stagnant Water at Home and in Gardens to Prevent Mosquito Bites and Dangerous Diseases

With the rise in temperatures and humidity, the risk of an increase in the prevalence of mosquitoes, which can cause biting nuisances and even transmit diseases, is growing. The Ministry of Environmental Protection is launching a public awareness campaign calling on the general public to dry out sources of stagnant water at home and in their residential surroundings. This is an effective and safe measure to prevent mosquito breeding, reduce bites, and decrease the risk of human morbidity.

The campaign, produced by the Government Advertising Agency, will be launched to the general public, the Haredi community, and the Arab community on digital and social media platforms. The campaign calls on the public to dry out stagnant water in private areas, including yards, gardens, balconies, and even inside the home, and to contact the local authority in cases of mosquito nuisances or stagnant water in Public spaces.

The Main Slogan: No Stagnant Water, No Mosquitoes.

Simple Actions That Can Make a Difference:

  1. Drying out stagnant water in residential surroundings
  2. Preventing liquid from accumulating in flowerpot saucers
  3. Repairing water leaks
  4. Disposing of objects that can hold water

The Ministry emphasizes that in most cases, spraying against mosquitoes will provide a quick solution to a mosquito hazard. However, this solution will be short-term, as it does not prevent the emergence of the next breeding cycle, which is very likely already developing in nearby sources of stagnant water. When the next cycle completes its maturation process, the mosquito hazard will return. Therefore, drying out sources of stagnant water is the key tool for breaking the breeding chain and achieving a real, long-term reduction in the number of mosquitoes in the residential area.

When stagnant water is located in a Public space, it should be reported to the local authority, which is the body authorized to handle hazards through prevention, routine monitoring, and Pest control if necessary. This year, alongside the campaign, the Ministry is instructing local authorities across the country to take action to prevent, monitor, and control sanitary pests, including mosquitoes, sandflies, flies, ants, and cockroaches, even before they become a health hazard.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection calls on the public to join the national effort to reduce the mosquito population by ensuring the drying of stagnant water sources in their home environment. These simple preventative actions are key to reducing biting nuisances and protecting public health.

Idit Silman, Minister of Environmental Protection: “The fight against mosquitoes starts with each and every one of us – in our yards, on our balconies, and in our gardens. Drying out stagnant water is a simple, effective, and free action that prevents bites and diseases and protects the health of our families and ourselves. This summer, we all take responsibility: no stagnant water, no mosquitoes”.

Dr. Shay Reicher, Head of the Pest and Extermination Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection: Dr. Shay Reicher, Head of the Pest and Extermination Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection: “Stagnant water is an essential condition for mosquito breeding. Anyone who wants to avoid the presence of bothersome biting mosquitoes in their residential environment must know this simple rule: no stagnant water, no mosquito breeding. Sources of stagnant water in the home and garden can serve as an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. So before moving on to chemical pest control, it is advisable to reduce the mosquito population by drying out sources of stagnant water, which is undoubtedly the most effective and safest means to prevent mosquito bites and protect your health”.
