Imagine a 14-year-old girl, born with a heart defect, flying across continents—holding on to the hope for one more heartbeat

This incredible story marked one of the most moving moments during the visit of Gilad Shadmon, Director General of the Ministry for Regional Cooperation of Israel, to the Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia—the central Ethiopian partner of the Israeli organization “Save a Child’s Heart.”

At the hospital entrance, we were greeted by a group of program graduates — men and women who, as children, had flown to Israel for life-saving surgery. With flowers in hand and tears in their eyes, they came to say thank you to the State of Israel. A heartwarming full-circle moment.

In our meeting with Mr. Hiruy Ali, Director General of the center, and with the program’s alumni, we witnessed firsthand the profound impact of this special bond—between Israel and Ethiopia, between medicine and humanity.

The face of Meron, once a young patient and now a doctor herself, symbolized what began as a medical project and became a deep bridge of compassion.

The Ministry for Regional Cooperation is proud to have supported this initiative since 2017, and to continue promoting projects that bring immense honor to Israel—not only as a nation of technology, but as a nation with a big heart.
