Jerusalem, 15 April, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s National Planning and Building Council approved two new plans to expand and relocate cooking gas (LPG) storage capacity following missile damage to refineries in the Haifa Bay area. The decision follows broader preparations for the gradual phase-out of Haifa’s petrochemical activity and relocation of essential energy infrastructure.

Under the plan, an emergency LPG storage site will be built at Neot Hovav with capacity of about 20,000 tons, while Ashdod storage will be expanded by 10,000 tons. Neot Hovav, south of Beer-Sheva, is the site of Israel’s main hazardous waste disposal facility.

Environmental organizations opposed the decision, calling it “a security danger that will lead to an environmental crisis and economic damage.”
