Jerusalem, 18 December, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The Joint Price Committee of Israel’s Economy and Industry and Finance Ministries is holding a public hearing ahead of a proposed 26% cut in the price of kosher flour for Passover. The reduction follows an examination of production costs at “Mother of Wheat,” Israel’s sole controlled flour producer, which found significant cost declines.
Minister of Economy and Industry Nir Barkat said authorities may also supervise the price of matzah — unleavened bread — to prevent “unnecessary increases at the expense of the public,” emphasizing that consumers should not fund “profiteering celebrations” on basic Passover necessities. The hearing allows stakeholders to submit comments before final approval.
In March, Barkat ordered Israel’s two main matzo producers to submit detailed documents to examine if they were inflating prices.
The production cost of matzah is estimated at NIS 7.4 ($2.02) for a 2.5 kg package, the ministry said at the time, adding that the retail price gap, averaging NIS 30-33 ($8.17-$8.99) will be closely examined for fairness.
Matzah, or unleavened bread, is eaten during the week-long holiday that commemorates the Jewish exodus from Egyptian slavery.
