In accordance with the national emergency preparedness within the framework of Operation “Lion’s Roar,” and in cooperation between the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and the relevant government ministries, the essential economy definitions have been updated – with the aim of enabling the continued operation of the essential economy even during times of crisis.
As part of this update, it was determined that laboratories approved under the Standards Law, 1953, will be considered an essential economy and will be permitted to continue their operations even during emergencies.
The Standards Institution of Israel at the Ministry of Economy and Industry welcomes the decision, which views standardization and laboratory testing as an integral part of the State of Israel‘s essential defense system. The approved laboratories are responsible for testing products intended for the local and international markets, including medical equipment, electrical products, infrastructure, hazardous materials, food products, and more – and therefore they constitute a central link in maintaining the quality, safety, and health of the public, even during emergencies.
In accordance with the decision, the laboratories’ operations will be carried out while adhering to the Home Front Command’s guidelines, and in accordance with the defense conditions as published to the public.
Igor Duskolovitch, the Supervisor of Standards at the Ministry of Economy, notes that: “The recognition of approved laboratories as an essential economy is an important component in ensuring functional continuity for the economy. Standardization and testing are critical infrastructure for the proper and safe operation of all sectors of the economy – both in routine times and during emergencies. The Ministry of Economy will continue to work to maintain industrial and functional resilience throughout the year.”
