Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Eli Cohen: “We are strengthening our position as a regional energy power and making Israel an energy bridge from East to West. The great sea interconnector, which will connect Israel to Europe via Cyprus, is a strategic project that will help diversify Europe’s energy sources and enable Israel to receive backup from Europe’s electricity networks in times of emergency. Together with my colleague, the Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, we will continue to deepen cooperation for the benefit of both countries’ interests.”
The ministers agreed to continue advancing the Great Sea Interconnector, linking Israel to Europe through Cyprus and Greece. This project is of strategic importance for Israel, as it will enable Europe to diversify its energy sources and contribute to enhancing Israel’s energy security. The project also reflects the vision of creating an energy and infrastructure corridor connecting East and West via the Gulf states and Israel, as part of the expansion of the Abraham Accords.
The ministers also discussed the Aphrodite–Ishai natural gas field agreement, located within the Exclusive Economic Zones of Cyprus and Israel.
In addition, the ministers addressed the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the field of energy. The meeting was also attended by Yariv Gesser, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; Amir Shavit, Chairman of the Electricity Authority; Chen Bar Yosef, Director of the Natural Resources Administration; Janet Shalom, Director of the Division for Major Projects and Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; Adv. Dalit Zamir, Legal Adviser of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; and Adv. Rachel Oberman, International Treaties Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
