Jerusalem, 22 June, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Supreme Court has rejected a request by baby Sophia’s genetic parents for an additional hearing, effectively reaffirming its earlier ruling that she will remain in the custody of her adoptive family.
A legal battle for the girl’s custody has continued for nearly three years after an embryo was mistakenly implanted in the wrong woman at Rishon Lezion’s Assuta Medical Center.
The Court also ordered the establishment of a framework to allow Sophia to maintain a relationship with her genetic parents. Chief Justice Yitzhak Amit wrote in the decision that all members of the panel agreed that a genetic connection to a newborn “does not, in itself and automatically, confer parental status under the law.”
