Jerusalem, 23 July, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday said that a July 17 mortar strike which hit the Holy Family Church in Gaza City was the result of an unintentional munitions deviation during operations.

“The inquiry revealed that during operational activity by IDF troops in the area of Gaza City, the church was accidentally hit due to an unintentional deviation of munitions,” army said.

The IDF added that it clarified its fire protocols near religious and sensitive sites and made adjustments to improve accuracy.

Three people were killed in the incident.

Hamas deliberately positions itself within Gaza’s civilian population to shield its fighters and infrastructure.
