Jerusalem, 6 July, 2025 (TPS-IL) — In the 2024/25 academic year, 35,586 academic staff taught at Israel’s universities and academic colleges, compared to 35,617 academic staff in the previous academic year, a decrease of 0.1%.

Of these, 24,577 academic staff members taught at universities, compared to 25,061 in 2014, a decrease of 1.9%.

In state budgeted academic colleges: 8,918, compared to 8,479 in 2014, an increase of 5.17%.

In non-budgeted academic colleges: 3,978, compared to 4,350 in 2014, a decrease of 8.55%.

In the years 2020/25, approximately 9,430 academic staff members were added.

In universities and academic colleges, in 2025 there were:

Approximately 18,400 full-time jobs, compared to approximately 17,480 in the previous year, an increase of approximately 5.31%.

Approximately 156,700 teaching hours, compared to approximately 154,400 in the previous year, an increase of 1.5%.

4,661 new academic staff, compared to 6,140 in the previous academic year (a decrease of 24%.

In the 2021/22 academic year, 6,084 academic staff members left universities and academic colleges, compared to 5,348 in the previous year (an increase of 13.7%). Most of those leaving are junior academic staff and external lecturers.

In the years 2005 – 2025, the proportion of women in universities increased in most fields, both among the total faculty and among senior faculty. The proportion of women at the rank of associate professor at universities increased significantly from about 19.8% to about 30.9%, and the proportion of women at the rank of full professor increased from 11.5% to 22.4%.
