Plan to Build 48 KM of Elevated Lanes Over Major Israeli Highway

Ministry of Transportation plans to build 48 km of elevated lanes over major Israeli highway, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation accessibility.

Ni Gil Tanenbaum Breaking News

Jerusalem, 30 July, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The Ministry of Transportation, through the Cross-Israel Company, is promoting the construction of 48 kilometers (30 miles) of new elevated routes on Highway 6, Israel’s only toll highway that runs north/south, through the center of the country, from the Galilee down to Be’er Sheva.

The project, the first of its kind in Israel, includes the construction of elevated lanes of traffic above the existing highway, with the aim of reducing traffic congestion on Highway 6 and the network of roads adjacent to it. This, “without taking up additional land reserves beyond those already used by the road today.”

Similar elevated roads are operating successfully in high-traffic countries, including the USA, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

The project includes an additional level of dual-carriageway and two-lane roads, alongside a dedicated lane for public and shared transportation. According to the findings of an initial inspection by the Cross Israel Company, in the first phase the project will focus on the busiest sections, where the addition of lanes is expected to bring significant relief: approximately 48 kilometers of new, high-speed elevated travel lanes will be constructed, which are expected to significantly improve transportation accessibility in Israel.
