Jerusalem, 3 June, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Despite adding 1,000 beds to government hospitals in recent years, not a single new nursing position has been created, the Knesset Health Committee revealed Tuesday. Acting Chairwoman Tatiana Mazarsky warned that Israel still uses a 1997 nurse-per-capita standard, even as the population has more than doubled. OECD data from 2022 ranks Israel 21st out of 25 countries, with just 5.46 employed nurses per 1,000 people — far below the 9.4 average.
The committee urged the Health and Finance Ministries to update and fund nursing standards, warning that the current shortage is straining nurses and compromising patient care.
