Israeli Youth Expected to Fill Empty Israeli Roads with Bikes and Skateboards On Yom Kippur
Jerusalem, 29 September, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Ministry of Economy and Industry published safety recommendations for bicycles and other manual vehicles like scooters and skateboards ahead of the Yom Kippur holiday which begins Wednesday night. Most Israelis observe the solemnity of the Jewish Day of Atonement and remain home, leaving the roads empty. This leaves them open to bike riders, mostly kids.
Unfortunately, every year many injuries are reported as a result of accidents involving cyclists, said the Ministry.
Bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, and toy scooters offered for sale as toys are also widely used among older children/teens, and are already required to carry a warning regarding the maximum permitted body weight and a warning regarding the obligation to use protective equipment such as hand, knee and elbow pads.
Wearing a safety helmet is mandatory for all use of all the items mentioned, and constant supervision by an adult is required.
The use of a protective helmet for cyclists (including toddlers and children) is mandatory according to the Traffic Ordinance, and bicycles should not be ridden without wearing an appropriate protective helmet. The helmet marking will include the Hebrew inscription “helmet for cyclists,” the manufacturer’s name, model name and country of manufacture, date of manufacture, size and weight of the helmet. Instructions for use are attached to the helmet.
