Israeli Residents Advised to Drain Standing Water After West Nile Mosquito Detection
Israeli authorities detect West Nile fever virus-carrying mosquitoes in Mateh Binyamin and Gezer regional councils, urging residents to drain standing water.
Jerusalem, 25 September, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israeli authorities have detected mosquitoes carrying the West Nile fever virus in the Mateh Binyamin and Gezer regional councils, the Ministries of Environmental Protection and Health reported on Thursday.
Officials urged local authorities to intensify pest control efforts while advising residents to remove standing water, use repellents, and install nets.
West Nile fever, transmitted by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds, is usually mild, though severe cases can cause encephalitis or meningitis. Since January, four cases have been confirmed. Experts warn that hot, humid summer conditions increase mosquito breeding, and public cooperation is essential to reduce the risk of bites and illness.
