Israeli Oncologist Leads Global Team Revising Lung Cancer Treatment Guidelines
Jerusalem, 31 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israeli oncologist Prof. Alona Zer is leading the team revising the global guidelines for lung cancer treatment, Haifa’s Rambam Hospital announced. As Director of Medical Oncology, Zer headed the international panel that updated the recommendations for Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer, published by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
These guidelines, refreshed every five years, guide more than 40,000 oncologists in 179 countries. Lung cancer remains the world’s leading cause of cancer death, with over 2.2 million new cases annually, mainly linked to smoking and other environmental risks.
Prof. Zer described the year-long project as intensive but collaborative, noting that “despite the difficult events in Israel, our international team worked seamlessly via meetings and Zoom calls.”
