Israel Sees 7% Decrease in Authorized Marriages

Jerusalem, 10 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) — In 2023, 48,025 couples were married in Israel in religious institutions authorized to perform marriages, a decrease of 7% compared to the number of couples married in 2022. About 69% (33,285) of the couples who married were Jewish, a decrease of 10.4% compared to 2022. This according to the data released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the percentage of young Jews living in cohabitation (cohabitation of unmarried couples), parallel to a decrease in the rate of marriage.

The average age of marriage among Jewish first-time brides was 27 (27.2 in the general population). For comparison, in 2022 this age was 27.3 among both Jews and the general population.

The average age of marriage among Jewish brides who married for the first time was 25.4 (25 among the general population). For comparison, in 2022 this age was 25.6 (25.1 among the general population).

In 2023, 9,035 marriages took place abroad and in which at least one of the spouses was registered in Israel’s Population Registry were reported to the Population Registry.
