Hungarian FM Condemns Hamas, Rejects Possible EU Sanctions on Israel

Jerusalem, 28 May, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem. Szijjarto is in Israel as part of his participation in the international conference on combating anti-Semitism.

During their meeting, the two discussed the continued strengthening of relations between the countries, the situation in the Middle East, developments in the European Union and the international system concerning Israel, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Israel is Hungary’s friend and strategic ally,” said Szijjártó. “We condemn Hamas, call for the release of hostages and reject proposals in the EU that would harm Israel, like suspending the Association Council or sanctioning its citizens.”

“We are aware that the security of Central Europe is closely linked to the Middle East,” he added, highlighting Hungary’s vested interest in regional stability and its unequivocal stance against terrorism. “We strongly condemn Hamas. We demand the release of the hostages, including Hungarian citizen Omri Miran.”

He criticized anti-Israel efforts within the EU, saying, “We firmly reject such approaches, whether it’s suspending the association council or imposing sanctions on Israeli citizens.”

Minister Sa’ar said Hungary remains committed to bilateral ties, especially in IT, defense, medical tech, and food industries.
