Jerusalem, 7 August, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Shumen (BTA) – Since the beginning of the year, teams of the Regional Directorate “Fire Safety and Population Protection” (RDPBZN) – Shumen have extinguished 325 field and forest fires, including in dry grass, stubble, fallen leaves and waste, the press center of the Regional Directorate (OD) of the Ministry of Interior – Shumen announced.

Twenty-seven of the fires resulted in direct material losses. In July alone, 115 fires were extinguished. In 2024, 332 fires were extinguished for the same period, and there were significantly fewer accidents with material losses – seven.

In the next two weeks of August, we are once again entering a period with an extremely high fire danger index. The RDPBZN – Shumen appealed for strict compliance with fire safety rules and reminded of the ban on lighting open fires in the free yard area of the sites and the ban on burning dry combustible waste and dry vegetation.

The Ministry of Interior’s Office is calling on residents of Shumen district to be responsible and not to throw cigarette butts in unsafe places. Unextinguished cigarettes thrown out of the car window while traveling can cause serious losses in the event of fires, the police point out.

As BTA reported on July 14, with her order, the regional governor of Shumen Katya Ivanova ordered additional measures in the region due to the high risk of fires as a result of the prolonged drought, extreme temperatures and the presence of wind. A total of 33 fires occurred on the territory of the North-Eastern State Enterprise in July. The mayor of Shumen, Prof. Hristo Hristov, with his order, defined the time from April 1 to October 31, 2025 as a fire-dangerous season.
