Death of Unvaccinated Toddler from Measles in Jerusalem

The Ministry of Health reports that an unvaccinated toddler has died today from measles. This is the fifth death since the outbreak began, three of which occurred in the past week.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can be life-threatening. If symptoms appear, it is important to inform healthcare professionals so they can provide care if complications develop.

Measles is preventable with a safe and effective vaccine.

Vaccination recommendations:
All children should be vaccinated at age one year and again at age six (as part of the routine vaccination schedule).
In outbreak zones:

  • Advancing the second vaccine shot to 18 months of age
  • Recommending an additional dose for infants ages 6–11 months in outbreak zones or before traveling to affected locations.

Areas currently defined as outbreak zones: Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Bnei Brak, Harish, Modi’in Illit, Nof HaGalil, Kiryat Gat, and Ashdod.

In these zones, you can go to family health centers (Tipat Halav), HMOs, and special measles vaccination stations—no appointment needed.

As of today, 21 measles cases are hospitalized, most of them children under age 6 who were not vaccinated. Of these, 6 children are in intensive care.

With the holiday approaching, anyone who feels unwell should avoid gatherings to prevent spreading illness to others.
