Civil Aviation Authority Issus Advisory on How Medications May Affect Flight Safety
Israel's Civil Aviation Authority issues advisory on how medications may affect flight safety. Pilots and air traffic controllers urged to consult with aviation
Jerusalem, 3 November, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) called on flight personnel – pilots, air traffic controllers and UAV pilots – to check the medications they are taking, and to consult with a qualified aviation physician before each flight. Taking medications without ensuring that they are suitable for aviation activity may jeopardize aviation safety and expose flight personnel to personal, occupational and disciplinary risk.
Prohibited or restricted drug groups for the above types of pilots and by flight crews:
Benzodiazepines and opiates: may cause fatigue, slow reactions, and impaired coordination.
First-generation antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine): may impair memory and judgment.
medications that affect vision and balance: such as scopolamine and anticholinergic medications.
Medications that affect the heart and blood vessels: such as decongestants and blood pressure medications.
Medications that lower blood sugar (hypoglycemia): such as insulin and sulfonylureas may cause loss of consciousness or confusion.
