Jerusalem, 6 May, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The Galilee Medical Center has launched “For Health,” the region’s first specialized center for treating childhood obesity, addressing a growing health crisis exacerbated by the ongoing war.
According to Dr. Meirav Oren, the center’s director, obesity rates among children in northern Israel have surged since October 7. “Children confined to homes due to shooting from Lebanon experienced decreased physical activity, increased screen time, and more emotional eating,” she explained.
The multidisciplinary center assembles specialists in pediatric endocrinology, gastroenterology, nutrition, physical therapy, and psychology to create personalized treatment plans. These programs account for cultural differences in Jewish, Arab, and Druze communities while addressing potential medical causes beyond lifestyle factors.
“Until now, there was no comprehensive solution in the Galilee and Golan Heights for children needing organized medical assistance with obesity,” noted Dr. Oren, a pediatric endocrinologist who previously completed her super-specialty at Rambam Medical Center.
Childhood obesity increases risks for high blood pressure, diabetes, orthopedic problems, and social difficulties. The new clinic aims to combat these issues through customized dietary plans, physical training programs, psychological support, and medication when necessary.
