Jerusalem, 15 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The Ministry of Transportation and the Cross-Israel Railway Company have officially submitted the Southern Railway (Goral) Plan, marking a key step in connecting the Negev to central Israel.

The 13-kilometer railway, featuring a 4.5-kilometer double tunnel under the Goral Hills, will link the Tel Aviv–Beer-Sheva line to Ashkelon–Beer-Sheva tracks, improving passenger travel, freight transport, and safety by diverting hazardous cargo outside Beer-Sheva. A new accessible station with bus and bicycle facilities will serve the region.

Transportation Minister Miri Regev said the project “strengthens the Negev, encourages development, employment and growth, and provides residents with a quality connection to Israel’s economic centers.”

 The Ministry of Agriculture and food security, MK Avi Dichter opened the conference:  “Here, in the city of Eilat, where desert meets the sea, marine agriculture and desert agriculture innovation is the key to strengthening Israeli and global food security.  Our strategy is to greatly increase local production, while maintaining a high level of environmental sustainability and animal wellbeing.  I wish us all a fruitful conference!

Minister of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, MK Yitzchak Wasserlauf:  “There is a vision here shared by Israel and the entire world.  The conference deals with food security; and here in Eilat, we transform a problem into opportunities.  What appears to be a desolate desert, becomes a competitive advantage here.  This desert region is a laboratory for solutions.  Eilat is transformed from a city of tourism to a city that is also a center of information and knowledge”
In a world in which the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly more severe, and as the population continues to grow, food production systems must adapt to the changing needs.  The local aquaculture industry is a limited field that has been taking off in recent years, thanks to its tremendous potential as a source of sustainable, nourishing and effective source of protein, which can become a central aspect in the food security of the future.

 Yesterday, the Sea the Future 2026 Conference opened in Eilat, spearheaded jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Ministry of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience.  The conference will deal with research, innovation, technology and development in the field of food security of the marine agriculture.  Also partners in this conference are the Ministry of Regional Collaboration, the Eilat Municipality the Eilot Regional Council, AquaTec, AquaculTech and SeaNovation.  

The conference that was part of a multi-year government decision for the development of the city of Eilat and the Eilot Region, has attracted more than 400 researchers, agriculturalists, professionals, industry representatives and Israeli and foreign entrepreneurs, who promote national and global collaborative efforts and reinforce the connection between research, development and application in the field of aquaculture.
 
The conference is hosting international delegations from countries interested in technological and research collaboration, including: agricultural and fish farming ministers from Ghana, India and Azerbaijan, the deputy agriculture minister of Georgia and professional delegations from Romania and Morocco.
During the three days of the conference, a wide variety of Israeli startup technologies in this field will be presented as will ground breaking research and professional panels featuring senior members of the industry.  Topics will include: marine agriculture, advanced marine technologies, innovation and policy in the field of marine food, development of sustainable marine food systems and research and technological collaborations.  In addition, the head of the Food Security Administration at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Yuval Lipkin, presented the  national food security plan for 2050 that was formulated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in conjunction with government ministries, associations and organizations.
     
The Eilat – Eilot Region, characterized by the unique combination of sea, desert and extreme climate conditions, serves as the natural environment for the development of applied and innovative research.  In this region, advanced research activity is conducted in the fields of marine agriculture, marine biotechnology, renewable energy and marine science, alongside oceanography (marine and ocean science) and limnology (the science of lakes and potable water).  This activity contributes to the development of innovative solutions for coping with environmental, economic and social challenges.
Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Oren Lavi opened the conference:  “Seven delegations from around the world have come to the conference, with the shared understanding that the world needs quality sustainable protein, and protein from the sea is a central part of the solution.  The State of Israel is a leader in the field of mariculture knowledge, research and startups and integrates scientific innovation with practical application.  This is the true face of the State of Israel, a country that leads the way forward, invests in resources and develops solutions to global challenges.”

Aquaculture – Data and Numbers:
✔    The rate of global demographic growth, which is currently estimated at over 200 thousand people per day, is accompanied by the continuous increase in the demand for protein from the sea and marine food products.  These trends set a significant challenge for global food systems, especially natural fishing resources.
✔    Some 90% of the world’s fish species are currently over-fished or fished-out, and the marine ecological systems are experiencing difficulties in recovery.
✔    The growth rate of aquaculture and mariculture is currently the fastest of all the world’s agricultural fields, and is estimated at 8% annually.  The industry is worth more than $310 billion, and provides more than 50% of the fish consumed globally.
✔    In light of the continued demographic growth and increase in demand, the industry must double its activity within a decade.  This is an achievable target that requires extensive investment in innovation, applied research and development and expanding collaboration between governments, academic institutions and industry.  The aquaculture industry in Israel, most of which is still small and has even reduced in size in recent years, is expected to gain traction due to the national strategic plan and the allocation of specific resources for investment, research and development.  Currently, there are 200 breeders, entrepreneurs and researchers in the field in Israel, including:  fish and seaweed breeders, technology developers, protein substitute entrepreneurs, breeders of food sourced from the sea and research institutions.  
 

Jerusalem, 8 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Following the rising violence and crime in Arab society, President Isaac Herzog convened the heads of the Negev authorities for an emergency discussion.

The conference is taking place against the backdrop of the “New Order” police operation, which was born as part of the fight against violence and crime in Arab society, and it emphasizes significant enforcement and an increased police presence in Bedouin communities in the Negev.

The purpose of the conference is to jointly examine the solution to the issue of the lack of a sense of security for both Jewish and Arab residents in the Negev, and to hear the voices of elected officials in the Negev in all its forms.

“The situation in the Negev is a national emergency. It is impossible that since the beginning of January, 11 Arab citizens have been murdered in the State of Israel,” said Herzog. Stop and think about this number, 11 citizens! This is an unimaginable figure. This is a national disaster and a national challenge. The Arab citizens of Israel are entitled to live in complete security, just like their Jewish brothers and sisters. Israeli law must apply in all authorities, and it is our duty not only to establish it, but also to enforce it.”

The President of the State convened the heads of authorities in the Negev for an emergency discussion:

“The situation in the Negev is a national emergency. It is inconceivable that since the beginning of January, 11 Arab citizens have been murdered in the State of Israel. Stop and think about this number, 11 citizens! This is an unimaginable figure. This is a national disaster and a national challenge. Arab citizens of Israel are entitled to live in complete security, just like their Jewish brothers and sisters. Israeli law must apply in all authorities, and our duty is not only to establish it but also to enforce it.

The President added: “I commit to acting on this issue with the Israeli government, to improve the situation and bring about the necessary calm. I call on everyone to engage in dialogue. Violence will lead nowhere. I call for a full investigation and examination of the incident in Tarabin – this is important so that both the Bedouin citizen and the Jewish citizen know the truth.”

Following the escalating violence and crime in Arab society, President Isaac Herzog convened the heads of authorities in the Negev for an emergency discussion today, Wednesday, 18 Tevet, January 7.

The meeting is being held against the backdrop of the police operation “New Order,” which was born as part of the fight against violence and crime in Arab society, and emphasizes significant enforcement and increased police presence in Bedouin communities in the Negev.

The purpose of the meeting is to jointly examine the solution to the lack of a sense of security for both Jewish and Arab residents in the Negev. And to hear the voices of elected officials in the Negev from all its shades.

From the words of President Isaac Herzog: “I am holding this emergency discussion because it reflects a real emergency, an emergency that exists in the Negev, and it also exists in Arab society as a whole.

Today we focused on the Negev, and what emerged from the discussion is very important – there were many more agreements than disagreements. We all agree that we are against racism. We all agree that we are for law enforcement. We all agree that we must continue to build the Negev together. We are all committed to continuing together in the development of the Negev, its advancement, the eradication of violence and crime, and the provision of opportunities for the younger generation and all residents of the region. I call on everyone to calm down, to engage in dialogue. Violence will lead nowhere. I call for a full investigation and examination of everything related to the incident in Tarabin, this is important so that both the Bedouin citizen and the Jewish citizen know the truth. Ultimately, we must allow oxygen to flow back into the Negev, while continuing to ensure that the law is upheld everywhere. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and good luck to us all.”

Mayor of Be’er Sheva, Rubik Danilovich, emphasized the shared desire to find a solution and said: “This is not just another meeting – we are here to demand solutions, and there are solutions. Crime affects everyone, and they are interconnected. All citizens of Israel have the same rights, and they also have the same obligations. When the state does not act decisively, we see the result every morning in the number of murdered, especially in Arab society. This crime is clouding the relations between Jews and Arabs, between Jews and Bedouins, and endangers the common fabric of Israeli society. We have experienced severe upheavals in recent years, and we must not allow extremists to take over the discourse. The moderate majority must make its voice heard clearly, and the state must act now.”

Mayor of Rahat, Talal Al-Krinawi, said: “The entire leadership of the Bedouin sector and the heads of authorities in the sector see and cooperate with the efforts of the Israel Police in the fight against crime. We are not against the police, quite the opposite. We want a strong, present, and active police force, one that will fight crime with determination and equality. At the same time, it is important to say honestly that the situation is burning day by day. A discourse of threats and delegitimization is dangerous and ignites the situation. When a moderate citizen hears violent statements, he asks himself what he is supposed to tell our children, how they will grow up here together, Jews and Bedouins. Such a discourse must not deepen the rift and paint an entire public as criminals.

Mayor of Dimona, Beni Biton, added: “We are all here together, there is no Bedouin sector and no Jewish sector. There is one sector, and its name is the Negev. We are going through difficult and not simple days in the Negev, but alongside that, there is also immense pride and development here. Violence is no longer confined to the fringes – another murder, it bleeds and hurts. Violence reaches the Negev, the North, Tel Aviv, it is already everywhere. We have gathered here today to hold a round table and say enough! We must put this issue at the forefront and take action.”

The amended indictment, filed by Adv. Daniel Gilad from the Southern District Attorney’s Office, to which the defendants confessed, states that over a period of time, the two operated a systematic network to obtain matriculation exam questionnaires in real-time and distribute solutions to hundreds of examinees, in approximately 20 different matriculation exams, for a fee.

To this end, they used social networks under pseudonyms, recruited an exam proctor who photographed and transmitted the questionnaires to them during the exams, operated a collection system designed to disguise the source of the funds, and even instructed students on how to smuggle electronic devices into the exam rooms. In total, the defendants generated profits amounting to approximately ₪600,000.

In accordance with their confession, the defendants were convicted of offenses of obtaining something by fraud under aggravated circumstances, tax offenses, and money laundering.

During the sentencing arguments, Adv. Gilad argued that the defendants severely harmed the integrity of the exams, public order, the principle of equality, and public trust in the education system.

It was further argued that their actions harmed the education of youth and moral and integrity values, as they provided fraudulent services to minors and school students.

In the verdict, Judge Alon Gabizon stated: “Since the defendants called upon minors and high school students to cheat on matriculation exams, their actions also constitute harm to the values of education and integrity. The message of copying in exams and illegal ‘shortcuts’ is worthy of condemnation, and even more so when it is conveyed to young people.”

The judge further noted: “The defendants’ great audacity highlights the severity of their actions. The defendants, as well as the other conspirators, did not hesitate to use social networks and digital media to reach a large number of students, turning the internet space into an accessible and convenient platform for criminal activity… The defendants did not hesitate to distribute a TikTok video in which they offered fraudulent services.” And that the defendants’ actions indicate a blatant disregard for state institutions and norms of law observance.

In light of the foregoing, the court sentenced Shorouk Tzaluk to 44 months of actual imprisonment, a suspended sentence, and a fine of ₪300,000; and Wafa Tzaluk was sentenced to 36 months of actual imprisonment, a suspended sentence, and a fine of ₪250,000.

The third defendant, Majd Suad, who worked as a matriculation exam proctor, was convicted in accordance with his confession of the offense of aiding in obtaining something by fraud, and was sentenced to 400 hours of community service and a suspended sentence.

Jerusalem, 7 January, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today, Wednesday, conducted a comprehensive tour of the Western Negev together with Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and other senior officials. The Prime Minister’s Office said the tour was part of a “multidisciplinary national effort that includes strengthening and developing the region, completing strategic solutions in the region, and combating crime in Arab society.”

At the beginning of the tour, the members arrived at the settlement of Revivim, where they conducted an observation of the bedouin town Bir Bir Hadaj, and received a review on the handling and enforcement of the Israel Police against the phenomena of smuggling and illegal possession of weapons in the south, and were later exposed to the seizures of weapons and the thwarting of significant smuggling operations carried out by police forces in the area and at the borders.

The tour focused on a broad national plan promoted by the Prime Minister’s Office, which includes: strengthening the state’s grip on the territory, promoting plans to expand settlement and increase demographic growth, developing new employment areas, improving civil infrastructure, and meeting the security needs of residents. The plan is based on inter-ministerial staff work to strengthen the borders and build the multidimensional national plan for the Negev.

“The Negev is raging,” said Netanyahu. “We are curbing it, and an important operation by the Israel Police, in conjunction with other forces, has begun. To curb it, we need to understand that the criminal threat and the security threat are merging into one another.”

“Therefore, we will bring a national project to achieve all these goals, but first and foremost – to return governance to the Negev,” he declared.

The tour is part of a multi-disciplinary national effort that includes strengthening and developing the region, finalizing strategic responses for the area, and the fight against crime in the Arab sector.

At the beginning of the tour, the Prime Minister, Defense Minister and National Security Minister went to the community of Revivim, where they observed Bir Hadaj and were briefed by Israel Police Inspector-General Kobi Shabtai, ISA Director Ronen Bar, and IDF Deputy Chief-of-Staff Maj.-Gen. Amir Baram on police enforcement against the smuggling and possession of illegal weapons in the south, the significant seizures of weapons and counter-smuggling operations carried out by police forces in the area and along the borders.

The Prime Minister and Defense Minister of defense then visited the “Midbar Ish” farm near the community of Kmehin. The Prime Minister was briefed by the Acting Director-General of the PMO and the directors-general of the Settlements, and Negev and Galilee ministries, along with the Chairperson of the Ramat Negev Regional Council. They presented the progress in formulating the Government’s five-year plan, in coordination with the Defense Ministry, for massive demographic growth and settlement distribution along the eastern and western borders, with an emphasis on the Nitzana region, as part of the civilian responses required to strengthen the borders.

The tour focused on a large-scale national plan promoted by the PMO, which includes: Strengthening the state’s hold on the land; advancing plans to expand settlements and increase demographic growth; developing new employment zones; improving civilian infrastructure and addressing residents’ security needs. The plan is based on inter-ministerial staff work to strengthen the borders and build a multi-dimensional national plan for the Negev.

This is a national mission of the highest order. This is my first visit – the first of many – as Prime Minister for this purpose.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir:

“Operation ‘New Order,’ which we are currently leading to restore governance to the Negev, is the first of its kind after decades of neglect, during which the Negev was abandoned and became an ‘ex-territory’ where a monster of nationalist and criminal crime grew. Despite the efforts of criminal elements to try and deter us, we will not flinch: we will continue the operation throughout the Negev as needed, with the aim of restoring security to the residents. 
I thank the Prime Minister for his support, the Shin Bet head for his commitment to assist the police in the operation, and of course – the Police Commissioner, the Southern District Commander, and all our wonderful fighters and police officers who are taking part in this operation with dedication and courage. Our message is one: the State of Israel is the owner of the Negev, and anyone who challenges this will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.”

Defense Minister Israel Katz:

“Stopping the smuggling of weapons across the Israel-Egypt border is a top security interest of the State of Israel. The drones used for smuggling are intended to arm our enemies and are acts of terrorism in every sense, and a direct part of the campaign against the security of Israeli citizens – therefore, we have instructed the IDF to act decisively, to change the rules of the game, and to create clear deterrence.

Strengthening settlement in the Negev is strengthening the security of the State of Israel, strengthening sovereignty, and strengthening our hold on the territory. Settling the Negev is a top strategic defense line for the country’s borders and for the civilian home front. I commend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, just as US President Trump fought the drug threat – he is leading a determined war against crime in the Negev and the threat to national security. The State of Israel will act with a heavy hand against any element, from within and from without, that tries to undermine our security.”

The indictments, filed by Adv. Assaf Bar Yosef from the Southern District Attorney’s Office, reveal that since 2020 there has been a steady increase in smuggling attempts and seizures of weapons smuggled into Israel through the borders with Jordan and Egypt. In 2024, drones began to be widely used for the import of weapons and drugs. According to the allegations, “flooding” the State of Israel with illegal weapons poses a real risk both criminally and in terms of security, enabling terrorist activity, assisting Terrorist Organizations and their operatives in carrying out attacks, and seriously endangering the security of the country’s citizens, partly due to a significant decrease in the prices of weapons.

During November 2024, Saleh Jerjoui conspired with an individual from the Egyptian side for the purpose of importing weapons via drones, and offered the other defendants to join the activity. For this purpose, the defendants purchased drones at a cost of hundreds of shekels. On several different occasions, the defendants acted to import weapons from the Israel-Egypt border using a drone flown from Egyptian territory, with one of them serving as a lookout. The defendants moved in the border area equipped with communication devices, collected the weapons, and transported them into Israeli territory, aware that their actions could harm the country’s security.

In another case, on one occasion in the evening hours, Sami Sarhin listened to the IDF communication network and sent Saleh Jerjoui a recording containing reports from observers who identified the drone smuggling and the directing of forces to the area.
