Prime Minister Netanyahu on Shooting in Naharayim

Prime Minister Netanyahu on Shooting in Naharayim

as broadcast on “Kol Israel”
Jerusalem, March 13, 1997

“I am receiving regular updates from the area of the shooting. This was an abhorrent attack which caused a terrible tragedy – the murder of innocent young girls who were enjoying an excursion. We expect the Jordanian government to deal with the incident thoroughly, and with the fullest severity of the law, apprehend those responsible, bring them to trial, and investigate how the incident occurred.

I believe that this incident demonstrates what I have long contended – that the mentality of certain elements who sanctify violence and are prepared to use violence poses the greatest threat to the peace process. Neither do I expect anyone to grant legitimacy to violence, in any form. We may have political differences, but there must be a total, absolute and vigorous rejection of all manifestations of violence, of this or any other kind.”

The Prime Minister received a telephone call from Jordanian Prime Minister Kabariti. The Jordanian Prime Minister told PM Netanyahu that the Jordanians plan to deal with whomever perpetrated the act with the full force of the law.

(Seven school girls were killed and six injured this morning in a shooting incident by a Jordanian soldier.)
