Coalition Gridlock Leaves Knesset Without a Majority as Winter Session Opens

Jerusalem, 22 october, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s coalition government effectively halted its own legislative activity after removing all private member bills sponsored by coalition lawmakers from the Knesset agenda, following an ongoing dispute with Haredi-Orthodox parties over the stalled draft exemption law for yeshiva students.

The freeze leaves the government without a functioning majority, though opposition bills remain under discussion. Opposition leader Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid criticized the paralysis, saying the coalition “has lost the ability to govern” and should “go home.” The Knesset began its winter session on Monday.
